Effective March 1, 2010, all Massachusetts businesses that store, process, or maintain personal information (any employee, customer, or client), including credit and debit card transactions, must meet 201 CMR 17 guidelines.

Personal information, is defined as a Massachusetts resident's first name and last name or first initial and last name in combination with any one or more of the following elements: (a) Social Security number; (b) driver's license number or state-issued identification card number; or (c) financial account number [as appears on all checks], or credit or debit card number.

These guidelines are strict, and the penalties for non-compliance are severe!
